    Category: UNESCO Cultural Heritage Campaign

    Coordinator: Max Rößner

An application for the entry of “the planetariums” in the German national UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage was submitted on November 30th, 2021. Strictly speaking, it is not the planetariums that are suggested for this entry, but the educational work done there with its specific methods as a “special form of culture”. The preparation of this application included obtaining two supporting reports from independent experts, for which we collaborated with IAU Commission C4 “world heritage and astronomy”.

The application is currently being evaluated by the German UNESCO committees. A decision is expected in 2023.

Only after a hopefully positive decision by the German UNESCO committees, an entry in the international UNESCO cultural heritage list can be applied for.

Milestone reached: Planetariums nominated for the Intangible Cultural Heritage List

GDP wants to make the educational work of planetariums more visible: Now knowledge transfer in planetariums has been included in the state inventory of intangible cultural heritage in North Rhine-Westphalia and is a candidate for the nationwide UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
